Hello and welcome to 30 Skills in 30 Days for Better Relationships!

I’m Emma McAdam, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I’ve been working in the field of growth and change since 2004, and I love helping people learn how to have a happier, healthier life. 

Good relationships are the joy of life. Whether it’s spending Christmas with your family, hanging out with your friends, or working on a project with your coworkers, a good relationship makes things great, and a bad relationship makes things awful. 

Good relationships don’t just happen to you; you can create them. You can learn the skills to grow healthy, happy relationships; to resolve conflict; and to work toward shared goals as a family or team.  

What you’ll learn:

In this course you’ll learn practical, essential skills to build and maintain good relationships. You’ll learn communication skills, conflict resolution skills, how to stop the cycles of anger and blame, how to speak the other person's love language, and how to create emotional safety. But even more than that, you’ll learn how to lay the foundation of joy and love and connection through simple interactions that take minutes a day. 

Who this course is for:

This course is for anyone who wants to improve their relationships, whether it’s with your spouse, family members, friends, parents, or children. Throughout this course there is a slight lean toward improving marriages, but the skills taught can apply to almost everyone.  

You’re going to learn how to be a better partner - and when I say partner, I mean a companion; it applies to any type of relationship. When I say in the exercises “Practice this with your partner,” it could mean your friend, child, or whoever is sitting next to you. Skills like listening, conflict resolution, how to make repairs, and how to speak assertively are skills that apply to everyone. 

So when I talk about exercises like a date night, this could mean a romantic date with your partner, one-on-one time with your child, or a fun lunch outing with your work team. 

How the course is set up:

Every section has a short reading or video, a workbook assignment, and then what I call homework. Homework is all about taking a little action every day to strengthen and improve your relationships. It might be something like expressing appreciation or looking through some old memories. Do the reading first, and then make sure to do your homework. 

The exercises are essential to learning, so take the time to practice what you learn. Most of the activities take only a few minutes each day. Some sections have multiple exercises you can choose from, so just pick one that you want to try.
